A little bit in front on the ones and then a little bit in front of the others. But if there were any results from the past three years of running the state, maybe we would have a united and an open stand from the authority that it’s all about the principle “live and let live”, which, I believe, even the “homophobic” Serbs understand. In this case, it is a matter of pure arithmetic on whose result would bring a definite minus.
Unfortunately, those are not the only bad calculations which are not going our way. What hurts more is the new calculation of the state budget agreed upon by the International Monetary Fund when they realized that Serbia’s government is “an underachiever”. In such cases even the teacher gets tired and turns a blind eye, especially in an election year.
In spite of all plans and laws, the state budget’s deficit has been raised. That doesn’t mean that there is more money now. It means that the state will, in our name, taka out more and more loans. And how will we repay it? Well, it is the election year. A time for confetti, marketing, optimism and promises.
And so, for a few months we will live better, in order to live worse for probably a few years. For how long? According to the Prime Minister, who is in comic books represented as a coffee girl, and in the dispatches of the US embassy as a technocrat, until we enter EU! In the far away 2020 or so, after the rest of the world ends the battle with the economic crisis, which is supposed to peak in 2013?
We have had enough, is probably the estimate of the captain of the Serbian Government. We know when it will be better. Why do we need to know what we are going to do till now? Or maybe he is reasoning as a serious economist that in a market oriented economy everyone should think about themselves. Why should then he be the one offering us solutions for the near future where he could easily find himself on one of the electoral lists?
Long term prognoses are the key to success. He realized that during the last year’s promotion of the “Strategy of Serbia’s development until 2020”. If you pay close attention, you will see that this document is something like a Holy Scripture of the current government. It is quoted with excitement by all the members of the cabinets, but also by those who have no connections with the economy.
We should be fair and say that the Government is doing something. And not just anything. It is producing, creating, even though one cannot say it has a lot of innovation. It has continued its practice which has been going on for an entire “democratic decade”. It recently founded one more agency (not the one for naval accidents investigations), the one that should help the citizens with finding an apartment. It might be possible that the people from the Government wrongly interpreted Churchill’s saying: “When you don’t want to solve a problem, you form a commission”. We chose to form agencies which do solve one problem – employing the members of the parties for not so bad paychecks. Besides, no one will ask them about their performances.
