We tried everything – even classical medicine and different drugs, everything you do in such cases. And then we found out from a website about “eskozul”, a drug made in Cuba from a venom of a certain kind of scorpions and decided to try it – Jelena M., a 32-year-old woman, starts her confession. At the beginning of this year her father found out he had brain cancer.
Jelena is only one of tens, or hundreds of citizens of Serbia who tried to find savior with medicine made in this far away communist country. In the beginning she was very suspicious.
“How can a country, which is a synonym for poverty, be the manufacturer of such a revolutionary medicine?” In search for an answer, she found out that Cuba is actually a country where medicine has advanced a lot and whose citizens are blessed for having such premium care.
It is less known that the real blossom of health care in Cuba came right after its communist revolution. Ernesto Che Guevara, who was a doctor himself, took upon himself to literate the country and create good living conditions in the shortest time possible.
All available teachers were mobilized and collocated around the country. In a short period of time as much as 96 percent of the citizens learned how to read and write, which was considered an excellent result.
Something similar was done to the healthcare system. Doctors reached the remote part of the country, and the main accent was placed upon prevention and education. Currently Cuba has 75.000 doctors. Their Medical College, where thousands of young people from underdeveloped countries of Africa, Asia and South America are getting an education, is highly regarded in the entire world.
Almost 25.000 Cuban doctors are deployed in various humanitarian missions in 77 countries. And what they did for the earthquake devastated Haiti is still talked about and regarded as heroism and humanism.
