Serbia is on the right track

During the reform process, Serbian authorities have sought the opinion of the Venice Commission about the criteria for the general election of judges, said Buquicchio.

“We stated our opinion on the general criteria for the selection of judges. Authorities accepted them, although not all of our recommendations were implemented immediately. We were concerned about the plan to remove all the judges from their functions, but we agreed to the argument that it was necessary. Then we requested for this to be done in accordance with certain criteria. Some of the recommendations were adopted and some were not, but now it looks like things are going in the right direction,” said Buquicchio.

He pointed out that he is “generally” satisfied with the implementation of the Venice Commission’s recommendations in Serbia, as well as with other members of the European Council.

“Serbia can definitely achieve more, but much has been done so far and that’s why I think that Serbia is on the right track towards a better future,” said Buquicchio.

The compliance with the viewpoints and recommendations of Venice Commission is very important for the future EU members, as according to Buquicchio, the European Commission monitors the suggestions of Venice Commission and the actions of the country that sought for its opinion.
